Report: RTRC Sculling Section Annual Parson & Clerk Race, 25th April 2015

The annual Parson and Clerk race for coastal boats was held on Saturday 25th April. This now forms part of a newly formed offshore league of events taking place in South Devon. After a week of strong easterly winds which would have prevented any racing at sea, the weather relented to a south-westerly force 3-4 with bright skies for the first two races, but some mist and rain for the final race.
The ladies' race produced close contests between Exmouth A and Teign Scullers, and between Exmouth B and Mayflower despite Exmouth starting a minute late. Exmouth A overcame our local crew to retain the David Nelson Trophy. Two Teignmouth ladies rowed the course very bravely in a double scull, and though last were not disgraced.
In the men's race Torquay, competing in this event for the first time, were clear winners. Teign Scullers led the next group of boats to finish who were closely bunched despite Mayflower breaking a blade.
In the mixed race, Exmouth achieved a clear 1-2. The Teign Scullers double did very well, beating two coastal fours. The only seine boat to enter the event, Klub Video, had a very determined row in quite rough conditions to finish in under an hour. It is  a pity that no other seine boats joined them.
