Rame Gig Regatta 27th July 2019
On Saturday 27th July The Gig section of the River Teign Rowing Club ventured over the border in to Cornwall again last weekend, to attend the Annual Gig regatta for Rame Gig Club. 27 clubs descended on the small Cornish village of Cawsand to attended this regatta, making it one of the most popular of the year so far and one where a lot of the top crews were attending. So the pressure was on for Teign to show them what they were made of. The small beach was rammed with beautifully built pilot gigs of all colours and 23 identical club gazebos! The weather was hot and the sea conditions were near perfect. All a brilliant recipe for some tough racing.

Due to the number of Clubs attending this event, the start line for each race had to be split in to two heats. Each heat was to be timed in order to establish the final position for each race. Teign were allocated to race in heat 2 for every race. Teign had drawn the short straw as the main competition had been allocated heat 1. So it was a race against the clock!

The Ladies A were the first race to kick the day off. After a storming start it was obvious they were going to win the heat but they had to keep mentally strong and imagine they were racing another boat in order to beat the clock! They did well and finished 4th overall. It was the Ladies B race next and again, they had a storming start. Bridport and Dart were giving them a good race for the whole way around the course. They finished a respectful 5th overall. Now it was our under 16’s turn. A large turnout of junior crews attended this regatta and Teign had a solid start and kept up with their competition. It was a longer course than a lot of the junior squad are used to but nevertheless they did Teign proud and crossed the line in 7th. The Men’s A race was next and the competition went up a notch. Our men’s crew, consisted of a lot of new members to the gig squad as well as returning gig rower Simon held their own and finished 17th. Back to the Ladies again and the C crew were next to take on the fleet. They stormed around the course and left the rest of their heat behind. A really good solid row saw them finish 2nd overall. The final race for Teign had now come and it was down to the over 40’s to compete in the Ladies Veteran race. Again a good row from our ladies saw them mid pack and held on to the finish with some close racing. They finished 13th overall. Everyone had a fantastic day and Rame Gig club were awesome hosts. Well done Teign.
